The city theme in the Bible

For the last few weeks I have been listening to a podcast from the Bible Project about the city.

Within the Bible this theme of the city is an extensive one which is written about within the first book of the Bible, Genesis all the way through to the last Book of the Bible, Revelation. It does take some digging to find it in some books of the Bible. Tim and John from the Bible project thrash out the theme on the podcast which can be found here or where I listen to it on Google Podcasts starting here.

The idea of the Bible Project podcast is to explore what the Bible is saying and specifically how it points to Jesus. Often the talks lead to the production of a video as in this case with the city which was released on the 24th July:

Hebrews 13:14 (CSB): For we do not have an enduring city here; instead, we seek the one to come.

Hebrews 12:22–24 (CSB): Instead, you have come to Mount Zion, to the city of the living God (the heavenly Jerusalem)

John 8:12 (CSB): “I am the light of the world. Anyone who follows me will never walk in the darkness but will have the light of life.”

Matthew 5:14–16 (CSB): 14 “You are the light of the world. A city situated on a hill cannot be hidden. 15 No one lights a lamp and puts it under a basket, but rather on a lampstand, and it gives light for all who are in the house. 16 In the same way, let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father in heaven.

Philippians 3:20–21 (CSB): Our citizenship is in heaven, and we eagerly wait for a Savior from there, the Lord Jesus Christ. 21 He will transform the body of our humble condition into the likeness of his glorious body, by the power that enables him to subject everything to himself.
