Lilee

To all those who enjoyed hearing and reading about Lilee. Today she passed away very peacefully after 4 years of enjoying her company and personality.

We had Lilee from the age of 3 months and we believe she would have been 4 years old this month but are not sure of the exact date.

When she was young she used to try jumping from sofa to sofa when she was out and about. She would also climb the stairs in our old house not always making it to the top, usually only half way. Beardies as they are affectionately called usually head for a high spot or so we were informed – no not Lilee, she would often try and find a dark corner!

Lilee took to looking out of the window when we moved house. She would go up to the window/door of her vivarium always at the same corner and look out. She would bump the glass too to get our attention to get her out. When she was out she would often head for the French windows and rest her front legs up on the ledge and just look out. She liked to go outside as well but could be disturbed by the sky and what was above her. We did get some really good footage of her flattening herself like an elliptical pancake and pushing her head back inflating her darkening beard and opening her mouth really wide!

There was a point this year when she took to leaping from her basking log onto the fixture around her UV bulb strip light and hang on it. Sometimes she would approach from the side and get up on her tail and try it that way too.

She would love eating and chasing her live food whether, hoppers, crickets or mealworms (large and small). Occasionally a head would get left behind from one of the Morio worms! She was never really a great one for eating her salad and that lessened towards the end of her life. In the last three weeks we noticed a listlessness and not eating. She had three excursions to the vet – the last two she had x-rays. The first one showed definite egg development so that was thought to be the issue. We prepared a laying area for her but she continued to not eat and would gape in a strange manner and obviously she lost a lot of weight. The last x-ray the eggs had become more nebulous in appearance. The vet was OK about that but was concerned about her weight loss. She didn’t take well to her treatment.

We believe that she may have had some kind of ailment possibly colitus. We will never know. I was glad that we didn’t have to have her put down and that she died in her own time. I had always wanted a pet chameleon but after some research decided that a beardie was much less fuss. She was really special and my Fortieth birthday was made by her all the more so. We loved her colours and behaviour and we will miss her. A few pieces were written and drawn by the children and we said goodbye to her. She is buried in the garden now with a good view from the house in a sunny spot which she would have liked.

There is probably more I could write about her but I think as with all our friends there will always be more that we could say. This is not meant to be exhaustive – more of a way of expressing my grief and sharing what an amazing creature she was.
