If you are not from the UK or don’t know about self employment there is an explanation of what that is below. I am classified as self employed where my main work is as a gardener but I would like to supplement my income especially over the winter months from January to March when it’s cold and wet and not as much gardening to do.
General Definition of Self-Employment
- In the UK, a person is generally considered self-employed (often as a sole trader or limited company director) if they:
- Have a trade, profession, or vocation and are in business on their own account.
- Are responsible for paying their own Income Tax and National Insurance contributions via an annual Self Assessment tax return.
- Invoice clients for work done instead of being paid through PAYE (Pay As You Earn).
- Can decide how, where, and when they do their work.
- Can hire other people at their own expense to help or do the work.
- Provide the main items of equipment or specialist tools needed for the work.
- Do not have the rights and responsibilities of an employee, such as holiday or sick pay.
